Brazil's Petrobras Signs MoU with Angola's Sonangol

Brazilian state-owned multinational corporation Petrobras has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Angolan national oil company Sonangol, covering research and development activities in the oil and gas sector.

The agreement was signed during a state visit by Angolan President Joao Lourengo to Brazil in May, centered around strengthening trade and energy relations. During the visit, both President Lourengo and his Brazilian counterpart President Lula da Silva underscored the value of enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of oil, gas and associated sectors.

The MoU between Petrobras and Sonangol follows another agreement signed between the Brazilian multinational and Angola’s upstream regulator the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency in March 2025 for the joint study of offshore acreage in Angola. In addition to strengthening collaboration between Petrobras and Sonangol, the MoU is expected to unlock new avenues for exploration and production in Angola. Given the geological similarities between the two countries, Petrobras’ return reflects the potential for new development prospects offshore southern Africa
