Sonangol Unveils Electric Mobility Strategy, Targets 100+ EV Charging Points by 2028

Angola’s national oil company, Sonangol, has announced plans to install over 100 Electric Vehicle Charging Points (EVCPs) by 2028, as part of its broader energy transition strategy. The announcement was made during a company-sponsored pre-conference workshop led by Jelson Pereira, Director of the Energy Assets Operational Management Department at Sonangol Gás e Energias Renováveis, on the eve of the Angola Oil & Gas 2025 conference.

The EVCP strategy comes as Sonangol works to increase the adoption of electric vehicles in Angola, supporting the decarbonization of the country’s transport industry. For the 2024/2025 period alone, the company plans to establish 70 EVCPs, 30 of which will be located in Luanda. Sonangol has also launched a mobility application that provides customers with information on the EVCP infrastructure.

The charging stations are part of Sonangol’s multi-energy strategy, which includes the continued exploration and production of hydrocarbons, portfolio diversification through natural gas, and the development of alternative energy solutions such as electric vehicles and solar power. Simultaneously, the company is strengthening international partnerships in clean energy, aiming to unlock innovative technologies that enhance operational efficiency.

The company is also advancing the Quilemba solar project, which is expected to commence operations in 2026, delivering 35 MW in its first phase and 45 MW in the second. Developed by Sonangol in partnership with TotalEnergies and Maurel & Prom, the project will reduce reliance on thermal power plants and contribute to the diversification of the national energy mix.
