OPEC+ Maintains Stable Production for 2026

OPEC+ Reaches Agreement to Extend Production Pause into Early 2026

Eight member countries of the cartel, who held a parallel meeting, have also reached an agreement in principle to extend the pause on production increases through the first quarter of 2026, according to a source familiar with the negotiations cited by Reuters.

According to the official statement, OPEC+ also approved a new mechanism for assessing each member’s maximum production capacity. This tool will be used to define the quotas that will take effect starting in 2027.

This topic has been the subject of intense debate over the years, particularly among members like Nigeria, which claim higher quotas despite having limited unused capacity, according to assessments by the International Energy Agency.

Since April 2025, OPEC+ has already introduced approximately 2.9 million barrels per day into the market. Nonetheless, it still maintains 3.24 million bpd of cuts in effect, equivalent to roughly 3 percent of global demand. The group accounts for about half of the world’s oil production.

Last Friday, the 28th, oil futures contracts closed with daily losses and accumulated declines of nearly 4 percent for the month, pressured by expectations surrounding the OPEC+ meeting and the attention on diplomatic developments in negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Analysts at Barclays believe the potential for price declines remains limited, highlighting that even a potential diplomatic breakthrough in the conflict is not expected to result in a significant increase in Russian supply in the short term, considering OPEC+’s performance below targets this year.

The next OPEC+ ministerial meeting is scheduled for January 2026.
